Climate Catastrophists

No

Who should you listen to on climate?

"Catastrophists like Tim Flannery are turning normally sensible people into weather hypochondriacs. We can't just enjoy an early spring or mild winter any more for what they are. Every weather event is a sign of doom. We drive too much, fly too much, use too much electricity and generally make a mess wherever we go. We and our pets eat too much, poop too much, piddle too much -- off with our heads! What kind of bleak future are we advertising for our children?"

Just Another End-Is-Nigh Climate Guy -- Margaret Wente in the Globe and Mail, March 27th 2007

While the scientists are still debating the science.

Toronto -- As a professor of climatology for 22 years, I enjoyed Margaret Wente's column Just Another End-Is-Nigh Climate Guy? (March 27). She criticized Tim Flannery for cherry-picking the evidence and playing down the uncertainties on climate change.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which issued its report in February, consists of some 2,000 scientists. The report notes that, since 1850, annual global temperatures have increased (want to guess?) 0.7 C (an inconvenient truth?).

The report gives a table of the level of scientific understanding (LOSU) of factors affecting our climate. For greenhouse gases, it is high (we have lots of data). For other important factors, such as aerosols (dust etc.) in the atmosphere that cause cooling, cloud albedo (cooling) and airplane contrails (cooling), the LOSU is low (meaning they don't know). The scientists admit the effect of volcanic* activity is not taken into account in future-climate models: Recall that Krakatoa's eruption in Indonesia in 1883 caused global temperatures to fall by 1.2 C.

Think of the uncertainties when you hear the end is nigh.
